I love it when I hear stuff like this from the parents I work with:

“Karen, I have nothing to report, things are going well at home.”

“I can really see a difference in my daughter. She is actually thanking me for the things I do for her and she is not arguing with me all the time.”

“I don’t hear from the school any more.”

“I actually like spending time with my child now.”

And I do a happy dance, when my tween and teen clients share stuff like this:

“I used the breathing skill you taught me and I was able to calm down.”

“I realised that if I tell my parents where I am going and I come back on time, I actually get more freedom.”

“I can hear you in my head Karen!”

“I used the assertiveness stuff you taught me, the kid was still rude to me, but at least I didn’t get in more trouble.”

“I stayed at school today even though I didn’t want to be there. I used the distraction skills you taught me to get through the day.”

My specialty is providing evidenced based interventions that can improve both parental well being and the mental health of children and teens.

I help my clients learn the skills and habits necessary to thrive, despite what life throws at them.

I have been working with parents, children and teens for eighteen years in both hospital settings (e.g. prenatal inpatient, maternal-newborn, neonatal intensive care, pediatric inpatient and pediatric complex care) and community settings (e.g. child protection family services, adult mental health and child and adolescent mental health.)

I am trained in the following: Dialetical Behaviour Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution Focused Therapy, Trauma Focused Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. I am registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. I have a master of social work degree and undergraduate degrees in both social work and psychology.
